Do You Know a Shuman Family in LA?

I am Joe Manning, an author and historian. Since 2006, I have been conducting a research project to track down and interview descendants of some of the child laborers who were photographed by Lewis Hine in the early 1900s. There are 5,000 of these photos posted on the Library of Congress website. I have been successful for over 200 children. My Lewis Hine Project was the subject of a story on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered.

In one of the photographs, taken in 1913 in Dallas, TX, Morris and Louis Shuman are pictured as newsboys. They were Russian-Yiddish immigrants who entered the US about 1903. They eventually settled in Los Angeles. I am trying to find living descendants of this family, and I thought someone might be able to help. Here is what I know so far.

The family appears in the 1930 census in LA. They are parents Max and Rebecca Shuman, and their children, Louis, Morris, Solomon and Freida. Max is listed as a butcher. They had other children including Moses, Sophia and Sarah, who were listed in earlier records. According to California Death Records, Max died in 1940, Moses in 1948, Morris in 1955, and Louis in 1970. I was unable to obtain any of their obituaries, but all died in LA. According to the census and California voter registrations records, these are some of the addresses in LA where members of the family lived:

  • 2601 Brooklyn St
  • 2116 Bird St
  • 1501 Miramar St
  • 2143 and 1/2 Brooklyn St
  • 418 S Rexford Dr
  • 3137 Perlita Ave

Louis was an auto mechanic, and his wife may have been named Ruth.

Search Request

To the Jewish Genealogical Society of Los Angeles:

My name is Eliana Aizim, 66, and I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I’m doing genealogy research of one of the branches of my maternal family that immigrated to Canada from Ukraine. Some of my cousins moved to the United States. The main web site that I use for searching are JewishGen and Ancestry.

Podolia Gubernia

Podolia Gubernia

I have just found out on Ancestry.com / California Death Index, that Miriam White (her married name was Miriam Glickel) died in Los Angeles in February 4, 1951. She was born in the town of Pistchonke, Podolia Gubernia, Russia, in June 17, 1903. Her Social Security number is 069-16-6616.

I would like to know if you have any further information about her. Or maybe you can suggest some web site addresses where I may continue searching. One of the things I need is to see an obituary related to her. I would really like to find Miriam White’s descendents, if there are any. It would be wonderful if you could give me any help, specially because I don’t live in the United States.

If this envolves any payment, I can only do it by credit card.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
Eliana Aizim

Do you know Henry or Bess Fischer?

lodzTh

Lodz

I am writing from Melbourne, Australia and trying to find research information about my uncle and aunt Henry and Bess Fischer and family who emigrated to the USA in 1949 from Bremerhaven, Germany to Boston, Massachusetts disembarking in Philadelphia…destination the United Service for New Americans (USNA), Jewish Family Services in Spruce street.

Henry was originally from Lodz in Poland.

The family was assisted through the International Refugee Organisation (IRO), spent some time in NY and then settled in Los Angeles, California.

I am hoping to find immigration records, shipping records. I do have the name of the ship, death records or any details to assist with research.

I have tried ancestry.com.

As I am unfamiliar with finding/accessing information in the USA, any assistance you can provide, or links to find info would be greatly appreciated.

I have taken note of the excellent section on your site re suggested links.

I am wondering if perhaps the family was known to your organisation and may be further able to assist.

Many thanks,
Freda Leiba
