Daniela Gerson, The Wanderers: A Story of Exile, Survival and Unexpected Love in the Shadow of World War II

Sunday, October 18th, 2026

Program Description:

The Wanderers: A Story of Exile, Survival, and Unexpected Love in the Shadow of World War II is part genealogical detective story, part gripping history, and part contemporary reporting on war-torn territories. Daniela Gerson’s book chronicles her journey to excavate her family’s and her wife’s family’s past. In doing so, she presents a narrative history about the home left behind in Eastern Europe, the journey taken to survive, and how family history reverberates across borders and through generations.   There will be refreshments following the program.

Biography: Daniela Gerson is an award winning immigration reporter whose work has appeared in The New York Times, WNYC, Der Spiegel, and Financial Times. An associate professor of journalism at California State University, Northridge, and editor at large at Zocalo Public Square, she previously cofounded Migratory Notes and worked as a community engagement editor at the Los Angeles Times and as a staff immigration reporter for the New York Sun.
